Deterioration of Iraqi Women’s Rights and Living Conditions Under Occupation
Posted by Souad Al-Azzawi in Article on January 13th, 2008
Abstract:
For centuries, Iraqi women struggled for their human rights. It wasn’t until the 1960’s that some improvements in constitutional women’s rights were implemented. During the seventies and eighties, women’s rights improved significantly, providing better educational opportunities, political involvement, equal job opportunities, health care and development of laws and regulations to ensure a better life for Iraqi women and girls.
Deterioration of women’s rights in Iraq began during the US-UN comprehensive economical sanctions imposed on Iraqi during the nineties. In 2003, the invasion of Iraq by the USA and its allies resulted in the descent of the rights of women just like other elements in Iraqi society, infrastructure and the general quality of life.
To define the extent of the USA occupation impact on women’s rights and living conditions, a survey composed of 21 questions was distributed in two major cities:

Depleted Uranium (DU) weaponry has been used against Iraq for the first time in the history of recent wars. The magnitude of the complications and damage related to the use of such radioactive and toxic weapons on the environment and the human population mostly results from the intended concealment, denial and misleading information released by the Pentagon about the quantities, characteristics and the area’s in Iraq, in which these weapons have been used. The Iraqi population and environment have suffered a great deal of damage due to the continuous state of wars and economical sanctions since 1980 to this day. During these destructive war operations, the USA administration and the Pentagon decided to make the Iraqi people and Iraq’s environment a Guinea Pig laboratory for DoD testing of all types of DU radioactive, thermaboric, chemical, robust earth penetrators, microwave, and other types of weapons. They also decided to distribute all the 750,000 tons of radioactive waste from their backyard to certain parts of the world- beginning from Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, the Balkans and on to the list of similar countries. The U.S.A. and its allies used a new generation of radiological weaponry during their aggression against Iraq in 1991. These weapons are called the Depleted Uranium Projectiles .The projectiles were manufactured for the first time in the U.S.A. from radioactive waste generated from the enrichment process of (U-238) to produce spent fuel for nuclear reactors. Practically, these weapons should be prohibited due to their destructive effects on civilians and the environmental elements for thousands of years to come. Read the rest of this entry »

Published in Proceedings of the Annual Engineering Conference of Nahrain University March 18-20, 2002
Abstract:
The disinfecting process used in this study makes use of solar energy to inactivate pathogenic bacteria present in water. This tested treatment system basically consists of heating units for heating up raw water by solar energy and then exposing it to natural ultraviolet radiation of the sun spectrum. This system operated for fifteen months in Al Jadiriya area in Baghdad /Iraq to test its performance and disinfecting efficiency under different climatic conditions.
